【ASC-16】- Audio-Visual Work
ASC is for ascent. "ASC-16" is a creature made of fire-escape steel:
landings, flights of stairs, columns, beams and grating. It has no plan
and no top. Every hit of the music bolts one more part onto it, and the
part swings or slides into place with a clang. The stairs tend to keep
turning the same way, so the spine winds up into a crooked tower, and the
camera climbs with it at a steady pace.
Each part of the track grows its own kind of part. One percussion line
adds the steel itself; the others leave clusters of barnacle-like stubs,
small red fittings and frozen shards of metal. The bass grows machine
boxes onto the surfaces, and the leads run pipes across them. The chords
bring the heavy things: concrete slabs that drop in with a thud, and
white hull blocks built from boxes, wedges and cylinders, covered in
panel lines, hatches, vents and serial codes. Every chord also sends a
red laser sheet up through the whole structure, and the line where it
cuts across steel and concrete lights the surfaces around it.
The weather follows the song. It starts in dark rain, the clouds break
into a sun shower, the sky clears with heaped cumulus far off in the
distance, and it ends at sunset with the tower in silhouette.
Rendered in real time with raw WebGPU and WGSL. Driven live over OSC from Max/MSP.
