How Trump humiliation could open the door to a more extreme right

Donald Trump’s Republican party just took one hell of a beating. The President and the MAGA movement lost big in the Midterms with the Democrats taking full control of Congress - begging the question, what's next? [Subscribe to our Substack newsletter: https://channel4news.substack.com/sub...] There were shock results across the country, even deep-red Texas turned blue, and young voters were part of the reason. That matters because in 2024, young voters, and young men in particular, helped return Trump to the White House. Since then, that support has collapsed, with polling showing Trump’s popularity was through the floor with young people across the US. We wanted to hear from young conservatives themselves and headed to Texas, where the Midterms have kick started the battle for the future of the Republican Party after Trump. Some are still loyal to the MAGA project but others want to take the American conservative movement even further right. In this FourSight, we meet Ben Shrader, the chairman and president of the Austin Young Republicans, who has a literal shrine to Donald Trump. We head to Texas A&M on game day to hear what’s changed for young people since 2024. And we travel to San Marcos to hear the man who wants to spearhead the next generation of conservatism - James Fishback. He’s a new and controversial face on the conservative scene who ran for Florida governor this year. During that campaign, the state Republican Party pulled his invitation to a candidate forum saying, “racism and antisemitism have no place in our party”. While Fishback lost the nomination, he’s still filling campus halls as part of a post-primary tour, and several young men told us they hope he’s the future of the GOP. Trump’s defeat has left a vacuum, and young conservatives are already fighting over who fills it.
