Day in the Life of a Japanese Marine High School Student

A day in the life of a Japanese high school student at Miyazaki Marine High School. Unlike a typical school in Japan, Yuma studies Marine Resources and Environmental Management, learning about marine life, ocean environments, fish farming, and even professional diving. With over 76 years of history and around 210 students, this Japanese maritime high school offers specialized courses in marine navigation, engineering, environmental science, and marine food science. Yuma’s first class is Sogo Jisshu, or Integrated Studies, where today he’s studying fish farming. Students identify real world problems, research possible solutions, and eventually present their findings, developing practical problem solving skills for their future careers. Around 80 percent of students at the school enter the workforce directly after graduation, so Japanese school life here places a strong emphasis on hands on training. Students can even earn professional qualifications while still in high school. In Yuma’s course, that includes a commercial diver’s license and small vessel operator’s license. High school life in Japan can also mean a much longer commute. While younger Japanese students typically attend neighborhood schools, high school students have fewer schools to choose from, with many commuting by train each morning to attend specialized programs like Yuma’s.
