What Happens If America Is Hit by a Nuclear Attack?
In January 2018, every phone in Hawaii buzzed with the words "BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND… THIS IS NOT A DRILL." It took 38 minutes to tell people it was a mistake. So what if it hadn't been? We walk through it step by step, like scientists: who could launch an attack, the first minutes inside the command centres, how the warning reaches your phone, the flash, the cloud, the shelter, the invisible weapon in the sky, how the country keeps running, the days after, and what you can actually do today.

A note on the facts: no one can say exactly what an attack would look like. The damage zones in this video are the published FEMA and CDC planning examples for a 10-kiloton weapon; real effects depend on the weapon, the weather and the city. Warhead counts are public estimates, and the maps and city plans are illustrative. Up to date as of November 6, 2026.
WHAT TO DO (official US guidance): Get inside, stay inside, stay tuned. Go to the middle of a sturdy building or a basement, stay there at least 24 hours unless told otherwise, and follow official updates. More at ready.gov.
