Still Life with Tail. – Vintage Noir Jazz for Gilded Frames, Velvet Portraits & Red Wine

He was asked to sit for a proper portrait, and he took the job very seriously. Inside a heavy gilded frame, against a backdrop of deep rust-red velvet, he sits upright on a crimson cushion, his front paws placed neatly side by side, chest out, chin level, and surveys you with sleepy yellow eyes like an old aristocrat who has seen it all. Everything about the pose says oil painting. Everything except the long black tail that slips over the bottom of the frame and swings down against the green paneling. This collection of slow 1940s noir jazz plays softly while the sitting goes on. A dusky alto sax lingers over every note like a brush over canvas, the bass moves at a slow and stately pace, and the drums stay feather-light, while carved gold scrolls curl around the frame, a slant of late light throws leafy shadows on the wall behind, and a lone wine glass stands ready on a slender gold pedestal table to the right. Perfect background music for leafing through old art books, an evening glass of wine among your favorite things, a slow night with a hobby, or practicing your best portrait face. The painter packed up and went home hours ago. The model is still holding the pose, tail and all. Made for an ornate gold frame, a portrait that would be perfectly convincing, and one very dignified cat whose tail never quite made it into the picture.
